Restorations (Fillings) Post-Operative Instructions

Wait an hour before you eat. Avoid any chewing on the filling side until the numbness has completely worn off.

Children should be observed until the anesthetic wears off. Due to the strange feeling of the anesthetic, children might bite and injure the inside of their lips, cheeks or tongue.

Sensitivity to cold or hot beverages is common for a few weeks. Usually the deeper the cavity, the more sensitive the tooth will be and might last for months.

The gum tissue may have been irritated during the procedure (especially if the decay went below the gum line) and may be sore for a few days. Also, the anesthetic injection site is normally tender for a day or two. Warm salt water rinses are helpful.

‍Ibuprofen (Motrin), Tylenol or aspirin work well to alleviate the discomfort in the first several days.
